Environmental Awareness

History is Made

by Ben deRuyter

Wow, our team just left the Brewster Board of Selectmen, and after much deliberation, we were successful on all three motions! Sincerely, I am more excited about these actions and what they could mean for Cape Cod and beyond, than I was about any other action taken during my tenure on the board.

Long and short…

Brewster board voted 4-0-0 (Peter N absent) to request an Adjudicatory Hearing before the Massachusetts Pesticide Board to challenge the ruling by MDAR (Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources) in favor of Eversource’s 2016 Yearly Operational Plan which includes spraying.

Brewster board voted 3-1-0 (John D voting no, Peter N absent) to appoint Attorney Bruce Taub of Orleans as special counsel “representing the town on matters pertaining to the application of pesticides and/or herbicides on or about the Eversource right-of-way, and to represent the town at the Adjudicatory Hearing before the Massachusetts Pesticide Board.”

Brewster board voted 3-1-0 (John D voting no, Peter N absent) to authorize the Town Administrator to expend, from the town’s legal budget, up to $15,000 for all matters related to the Adjudicatory Hearing.

This is a BIG deal! We have our first town on board. I would love the opportunity to speak with you about the coalition of municipalities that we’re working to build. This incredible outcome is the result of years of tireless work by Laura Kelley, Bruce Taub, and Jim Garb, all of POCCA (Protecting our Cape Cod Aquifer). I am so honored to have just recently joined their team.

I would be remiss if I did not mention Jim Foley’s role in tonight’s action. He demonstrated incredible leadership in the face of some amount of adversity within the board. If not for him, I fear that we would not have succeeded on all three critical motions we presented to the board.

This is the beginning… and the impact may be felt far and wide. Feel free to reach out.

Cheers,
Ben
